If you are serious about getting the most out of your marathon then you may consider purchasing
racing flats. It is estimated that racing flats can improve your marathon performance by between 3-5
minutes over the marathon distance.
Racing flats are generally in the 7-8 ounce weight range. The reason for the difference in weight is
that they offer less protection than normal marathon trainers. It is for this reason that you should not
train exclusively in racing flats but generally use the flats in the couple of weeks before your
marathon race and for the race itself, in order to remain injury free.
You should also keep a log of how many miles your racing flats have covered and aim to replace them
every 200-300 miles. Again it will take around 50 miles to break in your racing flats and during
this time you should break in your racing flats over shorter distances to avoid blisters.
“There are only two options regarding commitment; you’re either in or you’re out. There’s no such
thing as life in-between.” — Pat Riley
so, are you in or are you out? Do you really want to run a marathon or not?
